William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873), was an American educator and clergyman. From 1836 to 1857, he published illustrated reading books for the first six grades of elementary schools. More than 120 million copies of is "Eclectic Reader" were sold, and for many years nearly all American schoolchildren learned to read from it. The simple readers taught children to respect the United States governmental and economic system. They played an important part in forming American moral ideas and literary tastes in the 1800's. 188 pages
